BRILLIANT, Ohio – Wheeling television station WTRF is reporting that a coal mining facility near the Eastern Ohio town of Brilliant will be closing.
OhioAmerican Energy, Inc., a Subsidiary of Murray Energy Corporation, announced the closing yesterday.
According to General Manager and Superintendent Stanley Piasecki, the mine employs 29 workers, but at its peak, 239 worked at the operation.

A statement released today from the Ohio Liberty Coalition blames the closure on, “Regulatory actions by President Barack Obama and his appointees and followers.” In that press release was a quote from Michael T. W. Carey, Vice President of Government Affairs for Murray Energy: “Mr. Obama has already destroyed 83,000 megawatts of coal-fired electricity generation in America…Electric prices…were bid up 800 percent (8 times) for 2015-2016 because of this.”
In 2008, then Candidate Obama commented on the future of coal-power, saying, “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”
A long-term GOP Congressman in Ohio may retire before the November election. Steve LaTourette from Ohio’s 14th Congressional District announced that he would retire recently. The Columbus Dispatch reports that during a meeting last night, Republicans urged LaTourette to stay in Congress and run for another term.
The nine-term House member from northeastern Ohio, had decided not to run for re-election, leaving the party rushing to find a replacement for the Nov. 6 election. LaTourette scheduled a news conference for today at his Painesville district office.
